Yellow, Gray, and White Manicure

Good morning friends,

I was searching through patterns and found some decorative paper that I found interesting. I duplicated the top middle sheet, and the left and middle bottom sheets.

Here's what I used.

Pretty Jelly Indie Polish Review: Chimera

Hello, my pretty pinkie polishers!

Today, I have a lovely indie polish by Pretty Jelly called Chimera from the fall 2015 Ultra Multichrome Flakie Collection. The collection consists of 12 sensational polishes that cover the entire spectrum of the rainbow. These polishes are chock full of flakie glitters that allow the polishes to shift colors and reflect light, creating a metallic sparkle effect. They do not require a base color, although a dark base will accentuate the color shift. Each bottle is $12.50 or you can buy the complete set of 12 colors on the Pretty Jelly Etsy store. I wouldn't wait too long, I think these will be a huge hit.

Let's take a look at Chimera.

Warm tones color shift

Cool tones color shift

This electrifying polish is hard to describe. I think I'd need a thesaurus to fully detail the intricate nature of the polish. But, I'll start with the color. The shifting and reflecting colors in Chimera, center around a green/gold/ that shifts to pink/copper/rust. When the colors shift to a metallic golden hue, and the light hits it just right, the reflective effect is stunning. This is a polish you could stare at and never get bored. The colors shift with the slightest movement of your hands. Definitely an attention grabber.`

Looking at the bottle, it's easy to see that the glitters and flakies are dense and evenly distributed. There was no separation in the consistency. The formula is very well done.

Chimera
Liz, the owner and creator of Pretty Jelly suggests that you wear this polish over a black base for a full on effect, but let me tell you, this baby needs no help with opacity. In three coats, the polish is fully opaque, but, you could do with two. Often glittery polishes require a special application to evenly distribute the glitters and avoid clumping, but I didn't experience much difficulty with Chimera. It applied surprisingly easy. I used an initial light coat, then applied the second and third coats normally without any concern for coverage or glitter/flakie distribution. I loved the consistency which wasn't too thick, and definitely not runny. And the dry time was speedy. Excellent if  you want to look like you have an expensive time-consuming manicure, but only have a few minutes to spare.

Pretty Jelly is entering it's third year in production and Liz is already looking to branch out into other beauty related products and expanding her repertoire of nail polishes. Among a myriad of beautiful colors, the brand also has a number of collections, including a 3-Year Anniversary Collection, 2015 Halloween collection, a Holographic collection, and the 2015 Ultra Multichrome Flakie Collection. According to Liz, several more collections are in the works. Be on the lookout for a Thanksgiving collection and a 2015 Winter/Holiday collection. I don't want to give it away, but her spring collection will celebrate the woman in you.

Liz got her start as a nail polish blogger. After a few years of writing and growing her blog, she decided to take the leap and create her own 5-free nail polish brand. And she's done a fine job.

Decorator Dreams: Fuchsia and Black Striped Room

Hi there my favorite, fabulous fingered friends,

When I found this little seating area, I was instantly inspired to do a manicure using the colors and simple lines in the wallpaper. The ornate table intrigued me, as well, with its gilded scrolls and marble top. I used those two concepts, the wallpaper and table to create this glittery striped manicure.

I hope you liked it. If you have a passion for interiors and furnishings, what styles and fabrics do you love?

Ciao for now.

My 5 Free Polishes Are Safe... Aren't They?

Hi friends,

If you're like most polish lovers, you may lean towards purchasing 3-free and 5-free polishes. The 3-free polishes are free of dibutyl phthalate (DBP), tolulene and formaldehyde. 5-free polishes also include formaldehyde resin and camphor to their "free of" list. Polishes that are safer and free of these, and other, harmful chemicals make us polish enthusiasts very happy, but are we still using chemicals that may cause us harm?

A new study found that a common ingredient called triphenyl phosphate (TPHP) is used in many polishes, possibly to make them more flexible and durable. This is so common an ingredient in many polishes and other beauty products that many manufacturers do not always disclose it on labels. As a matter of fact, it's so common that chances are, you may be wearing one of those polishes on your nails right now, scary.

TPHP is used as a plasticizer and a fire retardant in furniture and has been linked to hormone and reproductive irregularities and weight gain, among other issues.

A partial list of some nail polish manufacturers who use TPHP in some of their polishes are:

Spoiled
Wet 'n Wild
Beauty Without Cruelty
Maybelline
N.Y.C.
OPI
Orly
Revlon
RGB
Sally Hansen
Deborah Lippmann
Essie
Milani
ROCOCO
Barielle
Butter London
LVX
SpaRidual
Tenoverten
Ulta
Alessandro
Salma Hayek
Dr. Marvey

I stopped there because the list was simply too long to go through. Note that not all polishes by these brands contain TPHP, so don't go boycotting brands altogether, but if you have concerns about your polish, I would recommend that you take a look on the Environmental Working Group (EWG) website  which lists over a thousand polishes from brands that disclose the use of the chemical TPHP. I scanned the list and found a few polishes that I have, or have used at some point.

Be careful. Even those polishes that boast 7-free and 9-free vegan-friendly ingredients may include TPHP. In addition to the 5 "free-of" ingredients, 9- free polishes included paraben, xylene, ethyl tosylamide and lead to their "free-of" list. Lead and xylene are not commonly used in nail polishes and haven't been for some time.

Likewise, if your polish is not on the list, that doesn't mean that TPHP isn't an ingredient since some brands omit the chemical from the label.

Some say that TPHP isn't so big a deal to have in nail polishes. Some believe the whole 3-free, 5-free thing is a gimmick to get customers to change their polish purchasing habits. Do your research and choose for yourself. Let me know what you determine is best for you. I'm interested to know your thoughts, opinions or research findings.

Ciao for now.

How Do You Use Your Polish? It's Not Just For Nails Anymore

Nail polish is nice on your fingers and toes, but there are several other uses that might help make your life a little easier.

1. Waterproof your labels. Use clear polish as a coating to prevent ink from ruining labels.

2. Stop! don't lick that envelope, seal it with nail polish instead.

3. Stiffen fibers. Tell Grandma, she can thread her own needles now.

4. Costume jewelry chipping, peeling or changing colors? Try clear polish while they're still new and they'll stay new a lot longer. This works on belt buckles too.

5. Now your costume jewelry is all polished up, but the stone popped out. No problem, just reset it using a drop of clear nail polish as glue.

6. After salvaging your jewelry and resetting lost stones, you realize you wasted your time because you never liked them anyway. You just couldn't pass on the sale. It happens to all of us a time or two. That's ok, just use different colored polishes to change the color of the stones. Voila, new jewelry, that you bought on sale and really really like.

7. If you're a creative person and have an eye for color, try mixing polishes to match the color of a chipped vase or ceramic piece. Now Grandma will never know that you chipped her heirloom vase.

8. After making that chipped vase look new again, your creative juices are flowing and you just can't stop there. Grab a bowl, water, and a handful of polishes to marble papier-mâché boxes, bottles, or other small items you want to decorate. I found a lovely tutorial here by Kelly Bryden.

9. Get a rip in your pantyhose? Dab on a little clear polish to keep it from running. Did you lose that little piece of plastic on the tip of your shoe laces? Use polish to prevent the ends from fraying. Also works on ribbon.

10. Got loose screws? No, not in your head, on your nails. No, not those nails, the screw type. For a little extra hold, coat your screw with polish, then let them set.

11. Color coding. Have a bunch of keys and you don't remember which are which, let Sally Hansen color code them for you.

12. Since we're color coding our keys, why don't we use glow-in-the-dark nail polish so we can find them to get in the door at night. No more front door dancing to get to the bathroom in time.

13. Mark levels on a container. Track how much wine is missing from your bottle in the fridge, or that bottle of liquor under the cabinet. Ok, really, the idea here is to mark off measuring points so that you know how much of an ingredient to use in a container, or marking the inside of a bucket, but the alcoholic beverage thing is a good idea too.

14. Label poison containers. Draw a hot red X on poisonous products in your cabinet so those kiddies don't get shaving cream confused with whipped cream.

15. So the kiddies no longer eat your shaving cream, but the can is rusting a ring in your medicine cabinet. Well, you might not be able to prevent rusting, but you can stave it off for a while. Try painting the metal ringed bottom with clear polish to avoid those rusty rings on surfaces. You may have to redo it periodically if the polish starts to wear.

16. We haven't left the bathroom yet. The toilet screws are going to rust on your brand new toilet seat. Paint them with a couple coats of clear polish to keep them from rusting so soon.

17.  Your kids using your wood furniture as makeshift drums? You can fill the nicks with clear polish. It dries shiny

18. What? They used your CAR for a drum?! After you tie them up... I mean after you lovingly, but firmly discipline them, dab clear polish over the scratches on your auto for a temporary seal to avoid rusting. Then hold their allowance indefinitely to pay for a more permanent repair.

19. The kids are still at it. Now they've put a tear in your window shade. I know, you're tired of their shenanigans, but you can seal the rip with a dab of clear polish.

20. Little Jimmy and Johnny are fighting over who's truck belongs to who. Your fault, you bought them in the exact same color. But it's ok, because before you gave them the toys, you painted a red dot of polish under the wheel of Johnny's truck, and Blue one under Jimmy's. Problem solved. But next time, just buy different color trucks.

21. Smooth the edge of a nicked mirror or glass (not the ones you drink out of).

22. Paint a coat of clear polish over rough or splintered places on wooden hangers to prevent snags in your garments.

23. You're planning a camping trip for the family, but you remember what happened the last time when dear hubby fell in the lake with the box of matches in his pocket. It was one long, cold night that you don't ever want to repeat. This time, you're smarter. You'll coat all the matches with nail polish to waterproof them.

24. Your best friend forgot to mention that she gave blood today and fainted at the bar after tossing back three shots of tequila. Don't give blood and drink alcohol, lesson learned.  Just open that bottle of polish you keep in your purse just for these instances (your friend is a lush) and wave the bottle under her nose. Instant smelling salts.

Nail polish does a lot more than keep your nails looking fashionable. It can make your day-to-day just a little easier. Give a few of these ideas a try and let me know how it works out for you.

How To: UGH! I Spilled My Polish!

Hi Ladies,

No, I didn't really spill my polish, but us nail polish enthusiasts are constantly in jeopardy of doing just that. So, what do you do when you've dropped your favorite bottle of Essie on your beautiful bedroom carpet? Well, first, you probably spew out a choice word or two...or three...or... well geez, how mad are you? Then you might call your sister, it's an emergency right? No sisters, then that trusty Google is the next best thing. All the while, that candy apple red is just sinking and settling into your fibers.

No worries, I have a few solutions for you. Cleaning expert Jolie Kerr has it all charted out. Jolie has a very helpful and entertaining website http://joliekerr.tumblr.com/ if you need help cleaning...well, anything.

Here's Jolie's handy chart.

Downloaded from Huff Post
If you try out any of these methods, leave me a comment. I'd like to know how it worked out for you.

Decorator Dreams: A Blue Chair

Hi lovelies,
Today I have another decorator's dream manicure. I have always wanted to reupholster a chair. I mean really reupholster a chair, not just popping off the seat of a dining chair and staple gunning a fabric over it. I've done that a few times. Since I don't have the time to take on a bigger upholstery project, a girl can dream right? I found a few tutorials on Pinterest, and came across a lovely chair that piqued my interest.

When I spotted this reupholstered chair, I thought, "Hmmm, time for a manicure!" I dug into my arsenal and found three polishes that were perfectly suited for the job.

Here's what I used.

Boho Blues by China Glaze, Jolie by Zoya, and Light Gray by MdU

I'm still dreaming of furniture, so I might be inspired just one more time. We'll see. Lately, I feel like a soccer mom, no, a basketball Mom. Now, my little one wants to play too, so I signed him up last night.  I hope this change in my schedule doesn't affect my regular posting. I will still try for three days a week.
Ciao for now.

Color Club News: Two fantastic Collections

Color Club, known for it's popular holographic polishes, among other great polishes, has two new collections that you might want to look into.

The 2015 Oil Slick Limited Microbatch just might rival the Holo Hues Collection. What makes these polishes special is the Trichrom Technology that creates an oil slick effect. I won't attempt to describe the effect; I just know I have to try them out. It looks like there will be seven shades in the collection.

The second collection is the 2015 Color Clubs Matte Rouge Collection. This collection, also in seven shades, includes pinks, reds and purples, and a coral. The seven shades are Burn Out, Cash Only, Don't Kale My Vibe, Ice Breaker, It's Raining Men, Sorry, Not Sorry, and We'll Never Be Royals. Another collection you may want to look into.

Both collections are currently available in stores.

Morgan Taylor's Halloween Mini Set: The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Have you seen the Rocky Horror Picture Show? If you haven't, now's your chance. In celebration of the 40th year anniversary of the cult fave, a new anniversary edition Blu-ray is available in stores or for online order. And guess who else is jumping in on the Rocky Horror celebratory action? It's Morgan Taylor! She's celebrating with a brand new four pack mini set marketed for the movie, and just in time for Halloween. Did you know that the Rocky Horror Picture Show is the longest running theatrical release of all time? No? I didn't either. I did see the movie, however, and it was an interesting experience. to say the least. The movie itself isn't the draw, it's the crazy cult fans. If you haven't experienced it, go to a show and see for yourself. Don't forget your rice, and women's undergarments for the guys. And if you happen to be in Cleveland, like I was, then you'll want to bring the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Morgan Taylor's set comes with three of her top selling colors, and a glow in the dark top coat!
Ciao for now!

A Bronzy Fall Color by China Glaze: Goin' My Way?

Hi lovelies,
Before we get started today, I want to congratulate my son's team for winning the pre-season championship. They worked hard for the win. The trophy is BIG for a pre-season tournament, and they deserve it. Now, its back to 6am practice, Bengay ointment and lots of loads of laundry. I'm cheering them on for the real season, which begins next month.

This fall color is an oldie, but goodie. Goin' My Way? is from the 2010 Fall Vintage Vixen Collection by China Glaze. After running out of this beautiful lacquer, I searched my arsenal for a dupe, and came up empty. A few came close, but no deal. So I hunted down a bottle online, it arrived yesterday, and now I'm a happy camper.

This is a perfect polish. It goes on smoothly, with minimal streaking, and requires only two coats for full opacity.  I experience no pooling, and it levels well. So, yes, when I use up this bottle, I will buy another.  You guys know how I love Mundo de Unas stamping polish. I used MdU in bronze to accent my ring finger.

I think this color is perfect for fall. Do you have a favorite fall polish?
Ciao for now.

Inspired by a Fabric Color Scheme

Hello, my decorated diget dolls,

First, I have to apologize for not having saved the picture that inspired me for this manicure, and the names of the polishes I used. But trust me, I was inspired by some sort of fabric color combo.

Second, I want to congratulate my son's team for making it to the playoffs. They worked very hard this season, getting up early for 6 am practice, and running those dreadful 17's (not exactly sure what those are, I just know that they hated it). I'm proud of them, I hope they win tonight, and I'm rooting for them when the real season starts in a couple weeks.

Ok, now on to the manicure.

I did a bit of advanced stamping on three nails and thumb, and painted my pinky with a polish by Nails Inc. that I found on sale at Ulta. I believe it was from the garden collection (don't quote me on that). The pink and blue polishes are by Cover Girl.

I'm still in the mood for fabrics and furnishings. I feel a chair coming on for tomorrow.
Ciao for now.

A Green/Gold Antique Fall Gradient

Hi friends,
Today I have a gradient in green/gold, that's similar to the earth-tone one from yesterday. I used the same center to edge technique with three colors. Again, I added a little stamp on the middle nail. Does this look antiquey (not really a word) to you?

Here's what I used.

Calypso by Sinful Colors, She-She by Dermelect,
Just Spotted the Lizzard by OPI, Forest by MdU

`

I'm considering doing this technique using blue, orange or purple. Which would you like to see?

Ciao for now.

A Leathery Gradient For Fall

Good day lovelies,
I'm finally getting into the mood for fall.  I dug into my closet and stored away my summer/spring clothes and pulled out my fall/winter clothes and boots. I even purchased a few infinity scarves to accessorize my wardrobe. Actually, I bought more than a few scarves, (Burlington has a nice selection, great prices too).  But I won't get into that. (Can't go over my budget, I still have tuition to pay.) Of course, I had to pick up a few polishes as well. I've been really impressed with the Sinful Colors brand lately. You can't beat the price. I find myself reaching for those over my beloved Zoya and China Glaze. Often you'll find Sinful Colors in top 10 or top 15 lists of best polishes.

When I pulled out a few of my new fall Sinful Colors polishes, I couldn't decide which ones to use. So I settled on a gradient design so that I could use three. I didn't go for the cuticle to tip gradient, or side to side gradient. Instead, I went for a center to edge design that gives an aged look, or the illusion of shadows. Since I used earth tones, it kind of reminds me of old leather.  I threw in a couple of leaves for good measure.

Here's what I used.

Sinful Colors Rich  In Heart, High Spirits, Copper Pot, Mundo de Unas Copper

In direct sunlight

Tomorrow I'll have a similar design. I want to try this technique again. Any suggestions on colors?
Ciao for now.
